At one point or another, we’ve all looked around our homes and thought, “There’s just not enough space.” No matter how big or small your house is, it seems like there’s always something that doesn’t have a home and ends up cluttering a countertop or taking up valuable floor space. But it doesn’t have to be this way! With a bit of creativity and some elbow grease, you can maximize the space in every room of your house—and finally, have a place for everything. Here’s how:

Start in the Kitchen

The kitchen is often the heart of the home, so it’s no surprise that it’s also one of the most cluttered rooms. To maximize space in your kitchen, start by decluttering the counters. Get rid of any appliances you don’t use regularly and find creative storage solutions for things like spices and cookbooks. If your kitchen has a lot of open shelving, consider using baskets or bins to corral smaller items and keep them from becoming visually overwhelming.

And make sure everything has a designated home—a place where it belongs and can be put away when you’re finished using it. This will help prevent clutter from building up over time. Clear out your kitchen cabinets and drawers, and eliminate anything you don’t need or use. Then, put everything back in a way that makes sense for you. For example, group all of your baking supplies together or store all your Tupperware in one place.

Next Up: The Bathroom

The bathroom is another room in the house that tends to get cluttered quickly. To maximize space, start by decluttering under the sink. Most of us store cleaning supplies, extra toiletries, and other odds and ends under the sink, but this often leads to a messy jumble of things that are difficult to find when needed. Many stores sell organizers specifically designed for under-the-sink storage, which can be a helpful way to keep things tidy.

Invest in some storage containers and label them so you know exactly what’s inside. You can also declutter your medicine cabinet by removing expired medications and organizing everything else into categories. Don’t forget about towel storage! Towels can take up a lot of space if they’re not stored properly. Try rolling them instead of folding them, or invest in a towel rack that you can mount on the back of the door.

Don’t Forget the Bedroom

Every bedroom needs a place for everything, so start by decluttering your closet. Get rid of clothes you don’t wear anymore and organize the rest by season or type. For example, hang your shirts together and store your sweaters in a drawer. If your bedroom doesn’t have a lot of storage space, consider investing in some storage bins that can be tucked away under the bed.

It would be best if you also decluttered your nightstand. Most of us use our nightstands as a catch-all for things like books, magazines, glasses, and electronics. Declutter your nightstand and only keep the things that you use daily. For everything else, find a designated place elsewhere or in another room altogether. If you have trouble falling asleep, consider investing in a white noise machine or reading light that can be stored elsewhere when not in use.

Last But Not Least: The Living Room

The living room is usually one of the most-used spaces in the house, which means it can also be one of the most cluttered. To combat this, start by decluttering surfaces like coffee tables and end tables. Get rid of anything that doesn’t serve a purpose or that you don’t use regularly. Take a look at your book collection—do you really need all those books taking up valuable shelf space? If not, consider donating them to your local library or selling them online.

If you have any furniture you don’t use often (like holiday decorations or extra blankets), consider storing it in bins or boxes in a closet, so it’s out of sight but still within reach when needed. You want to make sure your living room feels warm and inviting, so only keep the things that you love and use regularly. Place them in a way that makes sense for you and your family, and enjoy your newly decluttered space!

A cluttered home can be frustrating and overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be! With a little bit of work and some creative thinking, you can maximize the space in every room of your house, so there’s finally a place for everything…and everyone can breathe easily. Always start with a plan and a goal in mind, then take it one room at a time. Don’t forget the little things, like decluttering your nightstand or maximizing towel storage. And most importantly, only keep the things that you use and love. A decluttered home is a happy home!
